Hundreds attend community carol concert
Monday 14 December 2009
Youngsters in York helped to raise the roof at York’s Community Carol Concert.
About 800 people attended the 52nd annual concert at the University of York’s Central Hall yesterday for an afternoon of festive entertainment.
Organisations taking part included York Senior Schools Concert Band, St Nicholas CE Church Choir from Dunnington, and Saxofun, a joint school choir from Elvington CE Primary School.
The Rev Andrew Foster compered the afternoon, while the carol singing was under the musical direction of John Warburton.
Organiser Graham Bradbury said: “We had a late surge of tickets sales so about 800 people turned up – about the same as last year – which is absolutely fantastic. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. St Nicholas CE Church Choir from Dunnington led the concert with their version of Once In Royal David’s City and a joint school choir from Elvington CE Primary School sang four folk Christmas songs.”
Donations were collected for The Press’s Guardian Angels Appeal and the Lord Mayor and Sheriff of York’s Christmas Cheer appeal.
Mr Bradbury said: “We raised over £1,000 through tickets sales and we think with the money raised in the bucket collections, we will have doubled that.”
